Te Ara: Māori Pathways of Leadership past, present, and future is an international touring exhibition consisting of 35 prints of Māori – their identity and their landscapes – created by Paul Tapsell, Merata Kawharu, and internationally renowned photographer Krzysztof Pfeiffer. Te Ara is a Māori story of tribal leadership from the time their ancestors first ventured into the Pacific over 3000 years ago up to today's global challenges.

"Merata Kawharu and I, as First Nation curators are very excited that the Te Ara story of Maori leadership is being hosted at Musqueam," says Paul Tapsell, co-curator. "This is the first time Te Ara has engaged directly with another First Nation culture and we are proud to be able to share our stories of struggle not only in Maori, but also in the Musqueam language. Our elders are now looking forward to joining with Musqueam to open Te Ara and launching its unique Maori/Musqueam language publication."

The exhibit is also accompanied by a trilingual book in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓, English and Māori, complemented by narratives from Paul Tapsell, along with Merata Kawharu and emerging Māori scholars Michael Stevens and Hirini Tane

Te Ara will be at the Musqueam Cultural Education Resource Centre and Gallery from August 9, 2013 through February 28, 2014.

The Musqueam First Nation invites you to the newly opened museum quality gallery at the Musqueam Cultural Education Resource Centre. The gallery features 1300 square feet of space where the Musqueam people can share their history and culture, in their words.

Musqueam gives a special thanks to the University of Otago, the University of Auckland, Māori Maps and UBC's Museum of Anthropology.

Open to the public, Te Ara: Māori Pathways of Leadership (nem̓ yəɬəl̕e ʔə kʷθə Māoriaʔɬ xeɬ k̓ʷs yək̓ʷam̓k̓ʷəm̓s kʷθə məsteyəxʷ) runs from August 9, 2013 through February 28, 2014.

Self-guided tours will be available daily, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the assistance of the Reciprocal Research Network (RRN) kiosk and mobile app.

Guided tours are available by appointment.
